Eagles' balance breaks Bearcats

On Friday, January 23, the Airport Eagles boys beat the Brookland Cayce Bearcats 65- 50 at Airport. The Eagles had four players finish in double figures. Josh Gordon finished with 17 points, Sting Williams chipped in 14 for the Eagles. Brookland- Cayce was led by both Jonathan Rumph and Jake Benton who had 15 points each.
Brookland- Cayce took control early. Benton scored nine of the first 14 points to give the Bearcats an early 14- 7 lead. Both Gordon and Sting Williams chipped in points for the Eagles to cut the lead to three. However, Rumph hit a three for Brookland- Cayce as the buzzer sounded to give the Bearcats a 17- 11 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter provided a back and forth tug of war between the two teams. There were three ties and six lead changes. Williams led the Eagles with seven points in the quarter to help Airport take the lead at 24- 23. Isaiah McLellan hit a shot on the next possession for the Bearcats to put them back up 25- 24. However, Weston Fleming hit two straight shots including one at the buzzer to give Airport a 28- 27 lead at halftime.
Airport began pulling away in the third quarter. The Eagles hit seven of the first nine shots to open up the third quarter and extend their lead to 40- 29. Gordon led the way for Airport with nine points in the third quarter with Jared Brown chipping in with six. Williams hit a three- pointer at the buzzer for the Eagles to give them a 47- 33 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter saw a barrage of three pointers from both sides. Jonathan Jenkins hit a three for Airport, while Oneal Jones hit one and Rumph hit two for the Bearcats to help cut the deficit to ten. However, Brookland- Cayce was unable to chip away anymore at the deficit.
Baskets from Gordon, Williams, and Brown provided the last seven points for the Eagles and put the game away.
