Explore champion trees in Congaree National Park
Congaree National Park is offering a "Big Tree Hike" led by Park Ranger Stuart Greeter, Saturday, January 24, at 10 am.
Congaree National Park is known for big trees, and many national and state champion trees are located in the park. This six mile hike will take visitors to some of the biggest trees of their kind, and show how champion trees are determined.
Participants will learn how to take measurements, and perhaps even locate a future champion tree. The hike will last about five hours and is limited to the first 20 who register. The hike and admission to the park and parking are free.
Participants should bring a lunch and something to drink. Sturdy boots and comfortable hiking clothes are highly recommended.
To register for the program either stop by the Harry Hampton Visitor Center at Congaree National Park or cal776-4396extension0.Again space is limited, and reservations are on a first come basis.
On Saturday, the park will also be handing out its new, expanded winter programs brochure, which will highlight many opportunities to experience the Congaree National Park including guided canoe tours, owl prowls (night walks), tree treks, and wilderness hikes. All programs are free.
