Cards top 'Hawks

The Cardinal Newman Cardinals took to the mat Thursday, January 8 against four- time defending SCISA champion Hammond. They came away as the team to beat in SCISA this year with a 66- 6 crushing of the Skyhawks.

The Cardinals started the match by winning the first four weight classes, including pins by Cole McCarter in 103 and Hunter Richardson in 112. Nathan Smith in 119 won a decision, and Conor Egan won a decision in sudden- death at 125.

Hammond got on the scoreboard when Guy Castles won a major decision over Alex Guerin in 130. Cardinal Newman's Talley Lattimore, three- time individual state champion, got a pin at 135. Then Hammond's Bradford McGillivary won with a pin in 140.

The Cardinals won the rest of the weight classes, including pins by Charles Ray at 152, Joey DeAngelis at 160, and John Bolchoz at 171.

Thomas Winstead at 145 and two- time individual state champion James Williams at 189 won by disqualification. Rush Tompkins and Greg Regan won by forfeit.
