Are they equivalent?
Killian Elementary students enjoy the equivalent fraction cookies after they are checked for accuracy. "Are they equivalent?" was the question of the day for students enrolled in Killian Elementary's Renaissance fifth grade math class taught collaboratively by Keithrick Alexander, Julie Sheehan, and Richard Handy.
Students worked cooperatively to demonstrate their understanding of equivalent fractions using large sugar cookies. After choosing partners, students were instructed to ice their cookies. As a pair, students had to decide which equivalent fractions would decorate their cookies.
Students marked in their icing the equal parts they had chosen and then used colored sprinkles to represent their fractions. They had to answer the question, "Are they equivalent?"
Students and teachers enjoyed the equivalent fraction cookies once they had been checked for accuracy.
