John M. Woodward, M.D.

John Maybin Woodward, M.D., 54, died Tuesday, December 23, 2008, in Augusta, Georgia, after a long illness. He was a son of the late Edward Mobley Woodward Sr. and Honoria Kirkland Maybin Woodward.

Dr. Woodward grew up in Columbia, S.C., and graduated from A.C. Flora High School, was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of South Carolina, and earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Charleston.

He had a successful private family practice in Columbia with an office near the Providence Hospital. After he moved to Georgia, he worked at the state Poison Control Center and later did volunteer work at Mercy Ministries in Augusta.

During his lifetime, Dr. Woodward helped many people, from long- time Columbia residents to inner- city children in Augusta. Everyone who knew John respected his ability as a physician. Throughout his life, he was much adored by all those who experienced his hearty laugh and endearing manner.

Surviving are his son, Thomas Edward Woodward of Columbia of whom John was very proud; brother, Edward M. Woodward Jr. (Marcia) also of Columbia; sister, Susan W. Wright ( Jim, deceased) of Saluda; and sister Nancy W. Twiford (Bortie) of Laytonsville, Maryland; and nieces/nephews, Martha and Joe Woodward, Kristin and Michael Twiford. Also surviving are aunts, uncles, and cousins who remember "Johnny" fondly.

Barr- Price Funeral Home, 256 Main Street, Leesville, S.C., is in charge.

John will be laid to rest beside his parents at the Elmwood Cemetery in Columbia (junction of Elmwood Street and I- 26). The memorial service was officiated by Pastor Burton Campbell of Saluda at 1 pm on Saturday, December 27, 2008.
