Cardinals win battle with Skyhawks
Cardinal Newman's number one player, Tori August, had little trouble with Beth Cotter, winning 6- 2, 6- 1. But Layna Plyler, Hammond's number two, had less trouble vanquishing her opponent, Evan Black, winning 6- 0, 6- 0. Alex August and Kelsey Zokan also won singles for the Lady Cardinals, and Rosanne Sullivan and Lilie Jane Hudson won singles for the Lady Skyhawks. A note of concern came in the number three match between Sullivan and Cardinal Newman's Andrea Martin. Late in the second set, Martin fainted after a point. Coaches and trainers reached her quickly, and Martin was up and about after just a few minutes. She was forced to retire from her match. In doubles, Tori August and Evan Black combined to beat Cotter and Sullivan, while Plyler and Alexandra Little combined to beat Zokan and Lauren Nottoli. The deciding match was the number three doubles, in which Alex August and Ali Black defeated Hudson and Brooks Burnside to clinch the victory for the Lady Cardinals.
