Atlanta, Georgia 30303-8960 (404) 562 9288 Public Notice No. 08SC0006 Date: July 25, 2008 NOTICE OF PROPOSED REISSUANCE OF A NATIONAL POLLUTANT DISCHARGE ELIMINATION SYSTEM PERMIT The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) intends to reissue a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit to Shaw Industries Group, Incorporated, 4401 St. Andrews Road, Columbia, South Carolina, 29210. The applicant has applied for reis suance of NPDES No. SC0003557 for its facility located at 4401 St. Andrews Road, Columbia, Lexington County, South Carolina. The processes at this facility are the polymerization of caprolactam to nylon resin and spinning the resin into fiber. The draft permit authorizes three existing discharges. Outfall 001 and Outfall 003 discharge into Saluda River. Outfall 001 consists of process wastewater, sanitary wastewater, utility water and storm water (SIC Codes 2824 and 2821) and Outfall 003 consists of non-contact cooling water and storm water. At the point of discharge to Saluda River, the receiving stream is classified as Trout Waters - Put, Grow and Take, suitable for supporting growth of stocked trout populations and a balanced indigenous aquatic community of fauna and flora, suitable for primary and secondary contact recreation, as a source for drinking water supply after conventional treatment, fishing and the survival and propagation of a balanced indigenous aquatic community of fauna and flora, and for industrial and agricultural uses.
