The Plight Before Christmas

It was the week before Christmas when all through the store, Everybody was shopping, and, oh, what a chore! The counters were laden with gifts for all. My hope was to please everyone, large and small. I had just viewed my list with care, Was ready to buy and leave this nightmare. The busy clerk had a tired look on her face, I wanted to be helped so I could get out of this race. The crowds how they pushed and shoved The words they used didn't come from above. Everybody thought they had to be served first, You had to watch for those who might pick your purse. Some wanted the clerk to look in the other direction, So they could shoplift without detection. Then, all of a sudden we heard a loud noise, We turned around quickly and lost our poise. Our eyes opened wide and our mouths did, too. The shoppers were astonished, but it was true. Upon the scene really did appear Old Santa Claus, but without his reindeer. His roaring laughter was loud and strong. Seeing him we knew, certainly nothing was wrong. More rapid than eagles, the children they came. They whistled, shouted and called his name, "Santa, St. Nick, Mr. Claus." As old Santa began to speak above the crowd, "Now children come by one, as is allowed." Then in a twinkling, I saw for real The happy children having their thrill. Talking and telling Santa their wants Nor fearing or worrying about his other jaunts. Their hearts were filled with dreams of dolls and bikes Of drums, of cars, of trucks, of trikes. I am sure all the children had been real good. Santa would come Christmas Eve, it was understood. As carols flowed through the store, we paused in awe Remembering the Christ Child the Wise Men saw. And the Purpose of the season was clear Thankfulness for the birth, a little Child so dear. Now our souls filled with joy, we looked to see If all the others got waited on, not just me! With the spirit of Christmas in our heart We slowly began to scatter apart. It seemed that we were thinking with hope and cheer, Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year!
