Letter to the editor
I enjoyed Warner Montgomery's article on the Erie Canal in last week's
Columbia Star and the interesting history involved, especially since I've had the pleasure of visiting the Erie Canal a couple times myself and even running several miles on the tow path at Pittsford near Rochester. My first visit during Christmas holidays the canal was frozen over; The second trip was in June.
I would mention a minor inaccuracy in your report. The correct subtitle for "Low Bridge, Everybody Down" is "Fifteen Years on the Erie Canal" instead of
Fifteen Miles. This is apparent in the illustration of the original cover for the sheet music displayed in your article. Additionally, the lyrics speak about time when properly recited with the only suggestion of distance being the last line about knowing every inch of the way from Albany to Buffalo, which as your report revealed covered 363 miles. This is respectfully submitted in the interest of accuracy which you are usually very careful to monitor.
Looking forward to Part II. Roy Ingle
