Bridge Creek holds Carolina- Clemson food drive
      Bridge Creek Elementary School held a Carolina- Clemson Week Competition Food Drive to benefit Harvest Hope Food Bank. Classes collected canned goods and non- perishable items for a week. At the end of the week, the class collecting the most items won a pizza party from CiCi's Pizza.

      A University of South Carolina senior with a passion for medieval music has received a 2009 Marshall Scholarship. Elizabeth Nyikos, a South Carolina Honors College student majoring in piano performance, joins an elite group of American students chosen for this honor.

Four BMS students make Region Orchestra
     Photo contributed by Blythewood Middle School Blythewood Middle School eighth graders performed at Region Orchestra November, 21- 22. Hayley Belton placed ninth in the first violin section (two seats higher than her original ranking), Hunter Durham placed fourth in the second violin section, RJ McDowell placed first in the viola section (two seats higher than his original ranking), and Naiesha Wise placed third in the cello section (six seats higher than her original ranking).

      Durrell Jules, a Lander University music education major from Columbia, does not recall exactly when he was introduced to music, but he figures his mother has been singing to him since his birth. He said his mother's talent was a direct influence in his decision to become a musician.

Heathwood Hall students raise money for "Corridor of Shame"
     Photo by Jim Covington Heathwood Hall students recently sold books at Books- A- Million for children of schools in "Corridor of Shame" district. "Corridor of Shame: the neglect of South Carolina's rural schools" is a 58- minute documentary that tells the story of the funding challenges in S.C. rural school districts. Richland One educator named a teacher of the year
      Richland One fifth- grade teacher Kelley Sumner has been named the 2008 National Elementary Social Studies Teacher of the Year. Sumner, who has taught at H.B. Rhame Elementary for 12 years, received the award and a $2,500 prize November 14 in Houston, Texas at the annual conference sponsored by the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS).

GSSM receives "excellent" scores on State Report Card
      The South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) has received two "Excellent" scores in the categories of "Absolute Rating" and "Growth Rating" from the state of South Carolina. Released in early November, the State of South Carolina 2008 Annual Report Card showed the continued trend of excellence at GSSM.
