Cardinals stop the Crusaders

On Friday, November 21 three Cardinal Newman players finished with double digit point totals as the Cardinals defeated Shannon Forest 49- 33. Jake Motto led Cardinal Newman in scoring with 14, while Zach Hrovat and Twan Alewine each chipped in with 11 and 10 points respectively. Despite a slow start, the Cardinals were able to storm back led by a strong defensive performance.

Shannon Forest was spotted an early 4- 0 lead. However, three point shots from Alewine and Ryan Zurcher, along with a near half court shot by Hrovat gave Cardinal Newman a 13- 9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Cardinals scored the last 12 points of the second quarter to take a 31- 16 lead as the game reached half time.

The Cardinals opened the third quarter with an 11- 0 run. However, the Crusaders fought back to end the quarter with a 6- 0 run to cut the lead to 42- 22.

Hrovat scored five points in the fourth, and the Cardinals weathered a small Shannon Forest rally to post an impressive win. Tori August led the way with 14 points and one assist, while Molly Rainwater chipped in eight points and four assists. The Cardinals used a strong defense, which forced the Crusaders into 13 turnovers, to get some easy buckets and to help them pull away.
