Payne "Mack" Montgomery, a senior at Cannon School in Concord, North Carolina, has signed a letter of intent to enroll at Stanford on a swimming scholarship. Mack is from Columbia and attended Spring Valley High before enrolling at Cannon for his senior year in order to continue training with swimming coach David Marsh at SwimMac in Charlotte.

Montgomery, who is the youngest son of Columbia attorney and Richland County council representative Mike Montgomery, is a Swimming World five star recruit, a USA National Junior Team qualifier in the 400 freestyle, and the 2007 USA Swimming Junior National Champion. Mack is a two time Olympic qualifier and not too shabby out of the water. He is a National Merit Scholarship Finalist and a 2008 Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction.

Montgomery believes Stanford has the most academic opportunities in the fields of study he is interested in pursuing and is the best academic fit for him of any school in the country.

Montgomery also felt a great rapport with the Stanford team and coaches and thinks he has the opportunity to achieve anything he dreams in the swimming pool. His father, who has been involved in a tough re- election campaign in addition to his son's recruiting process, is relieved both events have been finalized and is proud of Mack's decision to attend Stanford.
