The Lower Richland Community invites you to a visit to the past to the downtown Village of Hopkins.

In the 1920s, the Village of Hopkins was thriving with general stores, gin mills, industries, residences, and a Town Hall. The South East Rural Community Outreach (SERCO) has recreated a similar atmosphere. Visitors can sample homemade food items, dine and dance at the local tavern/café, and shop for homespun holiday gift from local vendors.

A museum displaying artifacts, maps, and photos of the historical era will be housed across from where a busy railroad depot and telegraph office were once located on Old Hopkins Road. Carnival rides and an antique car show will also be available. The Hopkins Village will operate from 11 am- 6 pm December 13, 2008.

For the second year SERCO will present a taste- filled and musical holiday tour of historical sites in the Lower Richland Corridor December 13. Departing from the site of the old Hopkins Train Depot and guided by a local historian, guests will travel by bus to the edge of the Congaree Swamp. From there, guests will be greeted by carols and hot cider at Mt. Maria Baptist Church founded 1872. The tour proceeds next to the Kensington Mansion, built in 1854 where hot chocolate will be served and a string quartet will play. St. John's Episcopal Congaree Church on Elm Savannah Road, 1858, and The Congaree Baptist Church on Bluff Road constructed in 1857 will also be on the tour.

The bus tour begins at 11 am- 3 pm. The costs is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12. Free parking and shuttle rides to the hub of Hopkins Village will be available. For reservations, call Mary B. Kirkland, 803-695-7669. Those interested in the bus tour must reserve seats.
