Eckstrom touts transparency
Races ahead of Columbia
      S.C. Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom held a press conference Tuesday, Nov. 18, in his third floor conference room inside the Wade Hampton Office Building, part of the State House complex. The occasion was to announce his new transparency program in the form of new software and its accounting of state expenditures.

      On the dole Two local banks, Carolina First and National Bank of South Carolina, through their holding companies, have qualified to sell stocks to the U.S. Treasury as part of the national bailout of its banks, aka Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP). Synovus, parent company of NBSC, will sell the Treasury $973 million in preferred stock and related warrants.

Middleburg celebrates 40 years
      Waverly Sanatorium used to be on Forest Drive across the street from Forest Hills. Founded in 1912 by Dr. J. W. Babcock, the retired superintendent of the State Mental Hospital, Waverly was a 50- bed hospital on 60 acres of wooded land. The Waverly property became today's Middleburg Park office and residential development.
