A memorial service to honor Dr. Matthew J. Bruccoli is set for 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16 in the auditorium of the University of South Carolina School of Law at 701 Main St.

The public is invited to attend.

Bruccoli, who was the Emily Brown Jefferies Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Carolina and a worldrenowned expert on F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, died on June 4 at the age of 76. Bruccoli was a professor of English at the university for almost 40 years and was the author or editor of more than 100 books on American literature.

Bruccoli and his wife established the Matthew J. & Arlyn Bruccoli Collection of F. Scott Fitzgerald, a collection of more than 3,000 books, periodical publications, letters, and screenplays housed at the university.

Thomas F. McNally, interim dean of libraries, said the collection, which is valued at about $2 million, will "contribute to future scholarship and the collection of more books. All of these things will last forever."

Bruccoli also established The Joseph M. Bruccoli Great War Collection at the University Libraries as a tribute to his father, a World War I veteran. The collection, the largest of its kind in the United States, focuses on the literature of the war and manuscript materials — diaries, letters, and documents — from participants.
