For five years, the Satchel Ford Fine Arts Committee has worked to improve arts programs in Richland One and public schools across the state. On Wednesday, October 29, their tireless efforts were recognized by the State Board of Education when the committee received the 2008- 09 State Department of Education Volunteer Award.

Because of their efforts, students at Satchel Ford have been able to meet and exceed the arts standard in music, dance, theatre and visual arts, setting the bar for other schools.

Members also created four annual fund- raising events and received various grants to help advance arts integration throughout the school and the district. Over the years, schools across the state have visited Satchel Ford to observe its outstanding programs.

"I am so proud that the Satchel Ford Fine Arts Committee has received this award," said Satchel Ford Elementary Principal Connie Alley. "The members bring energy, enthusiasm, dedication and support to this committee. They are focused on ways to ensure that children at Satchel Ford are being provided a quality arts program. I am amazed at their accomplishments and very pleased that they are being recognized for the work they do for our students."

The Fine Arts Committee is made up of mostly parents but also includes some teachers, administrators, and community members.

The State Department of Education Volunteer Awards honor exceptional contributions made by individuals, businesses, civic organizations, and school improvement councils. Candidates are nominated by school districts throughout South Carolina. Criteria for selection include promoting student achievement, enhancing school- community relations, strengthening school or district resources, encouraging a positive climate, and promoting teacher effectiveness.
