Eagles aerial assault downs Devils
Dreher fullback Jabril Williams lays out to catch a Jacob Gindman pass for a first down. After wind and rain kept their game from taking place under Friday night's lights, Airport and Dreher battled at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, October 25. The Eagles put on an aerial display rarely seen at Memorial with three touchdown passes and a bevy of deep balls to knock off the Blue Devils 41- 13.
Airport (7- 2) opened the game by immediately driving down the field for a touchdown. Using a spread offense and shotgun formation, quarterback W.T. Murden found plenty of running room on designed quarterback keeps and draws. The Eagles also used two- way star Rashad Hampton and Ricardo Jackson to change the pace in the ground game. Jackson tumbled into the end zone for a one- yard score just four minutes into the game for a 7- 0 Airport lead.
The Eagles again found the end zone just five minutes later when Hampton scored on a four- yard touchdown run. As another five minutes passed, Murden found Tyler Sturkie on a 39- yard touchdown pass. Murden used short passes to tailback Hudie Jones to set up the deep ball to Sturkie. Three minutes into the second quarter, Airport led 21- 0.
Dreher tailback Leonard Kennedy carr ies the ball in the third quarter. Dreher (1- 8) never gave up and their resiliency was shown again as the Blue Devils answered the third Airport touchdown with a strong drive of their own. Ardamian Player gave Dreher great field position with a long runback on the kickoff before Devante Sims put on a display of toughness by a running back. With hard inside runs including a punishing nine- yard run on fourth- down- and- one, Sims powered Dreher toward the end zone. Quarterback Jacob Gindman snuck across the goal line for Dreher's first touchdown with four minutes left in the half, cutting the deficit to 21- 6.
Murden was not yet done in the first half though, finding wideout Deon Hopkins for a 43- yard pass with less than a minute to play. Murden then found Sturkie again, this time for a six- yard touchdown and a 28- 6 half time lead.
Airport started the second half as it ended the first with a deep pass to Hopkins. Another 43- yarder set up the Eagles inside the Dreher ten- yard line. Hampton found the end zone for his second touchdown run and a 35- 6 lead.
Airpor t quar terback W.T. Murden runs with the ball in the third quarter. The Blue Devils contin- ued to play hard with Sims and Leonard Kennedy carrying the bulk of the offensive load, but Airport was relentless as the passing game foiled Dreher all night. Opening the fourth quarter, Murden got a lucky bounce off of the hands of a defender with the pass falling straight into the waiting arms of Hopkins who scampered into the end zone for a 30- yard touchdown on fourth- down- andfive for a 41- 6 lead.
Dreher did finish the game out nicely, using a seldom- employed offensive strategy: deep passes. Combating penalties and a string of bad snaps, Dreher broke out of its wing formation and opened up a four- wide passing attack. Gindman found Player for an 18- yard completion and then Chad Jasper on a 40- yarder. A bad snap sent Dreher back to the 34- yard line, but Gindman launched another deep pass to Kurt Stoudenmire who reeled in the perfectly thrown ball for a 34- yard touchdown with less than a minute to play.
