Bearcats and Eagles share another epic battle
The Brookland- Cayce Bearcats completed a regular season sweep of the Airport Eagles by beating them in five games, 3- 2 (25- 16, 22- 25, 22- 25, 25- 20, and 17- 15) Thursday, October 16 at Brookland- Cayce. On a night in which the seniors were recognized, it was three underclassmen who pushed the Bearcats to victory; Alex White, Alley Greer, and Ebony McBride.
In the first game, the lead exchanged hands four times before Airport jumped out to an early 10- 8 lead. However, the Bearcats stormed back, aided by big points from White and Greer, to take the lead at 17- 11 before Airport took a timeout. The timeout didn't seem to affect the Bearcats. Points from Kristen Hutchins and Mackenzie Cleland helped Brookland- Cayce maintain their lead. McBride helped them close out the game with the final point, giving the Bearcats a 25- 16 win and a one game lead.
Brookland- Cayce seemed on the verge of ending the match early, storming out to a 5- 0 lead in game two. But an error on a Bearcat return and strong points from Airport's Taniqua Canzater, helped the Eagles rally back. Despite going back and forth with the lead, Airport took control at 13- 11. The Bearcats rallied behind points from Greer and Hutchins, but the Eagles proved to be too strong and Canzater helped Airport to a 25- 22 win, helping to tie the match at one game apiece.
Game three included six ties, before the Bearcats got out to an early 12- 8 lead. However, Airport was able to stay within three points, until mistakes by the Bearcats allowed Airport to tie the game at 19- 19.
Each team fought hard for the lead, but more mistakes by the Bearcats allowed the Eagles to take game three, 25- 22. Airport now led two games to one.
Game four started out with the momentum clearly on Airport's side. The Eagles gained an early 13- 7 lead, but five straight points from Brookland- Cayce brought the Bearcats right back into the game. With the score at 14- 12 in favor of Airport, Greer and Hutchins helped put the Bearcats in front for good. Canzater tried to keep the Eagles in the game, but Alex White put the game away and secured the Bearcats win, 25- 20, to force a fifth game.
The fifth game, again, saw Airport take control early, but White, Greer, and Hutchins refused to let the Bearcats lose. With the score at 12- 11, it was anybody's game. Hutchins and Greer took advantage and were able to tie the match. It was White and Hutchins that helped the Bearcats win game five, 17- 15 and the match, 3- 2.
