The boys' portion of the SCISA cross country championships begins. The boys' portion of the SCISA cross country championships begins. St. Joseph's Catholic School came into the SCISA 3A cross country championships looking to unseat the defending champion Hammond Skyhawks in the girls' division. They left the meet as not only the girls' champion, but also the boys' champion, squeaking by Porter- Gaud in a very tight meet.

The championships were run Saturday, October 18 at a very wet Heathwood Hall course. The rains overnight had softened the track and also left standing water in many places. Therefore, the times were slower than many had anticipated. One competitor who felt his time was slowed was boys' champion Trey Parker of Wilson Hall, even though his time of 16:01:08 was over a minute faster than any other boy. He was followed by Joshua and Brad Benore of St. Joseph's and Hunter Frady of Ben Lippen. The girls' race was won by Jill Brunori of Hilton Head Prep, but St. Joseph's runners came in second, third, fourth, fifth, and eighth. Catherine Herring and Mason Castles of Hammond both claimed top- 10 results and all- state honors.

The St. Joseph's girls' score of 22 blitzed the rest of the field, with Hilton Head Prep coming in a distant second with 56. Local schools included Hammond in third, hosts Heathwood Hall in fifth, Cardinal Newman in sixth, and Ben Lippen in eighth.

St. Joseph's boys were in a tight race with Porter- Gaud, but eked out a two- point victory, 49 to 51. Wilson Hall came in a close third with 58. Local schools included Ben Lippen in fourth, Heathwood Hall in fifth, Cardinal Newman in sixth, and Hammond in tenth.
