Bearcats pounce on Blue Devil miscues
Brookland- Cayce wideout Jonathan Rumph runs by Dreher's Chad Jasper. Rumph caught a 10- yard touchdown for B- C's first score. The Brookland- Cayce Bearcats scored 21 points off Dreher turnovers to defeat the visiting Blue Devils 24- 7 on October 17 at the Cage. The Bearcats earned their fourth win of the year with three different players scoring touchdowns in the pouring rain.
The Blue Devils started the game with a strong drive, pounding the ball on the ground. Devante Sims powered inside and Ardamian Player took handoffs outside for the Blue Devils in the early going. Player's 29- yard scamper set Dreher up deep in Bearcat territory, but the first of four fumbles gave B- C the ball on the 10- yard line.
Using fullback Jacob Baxter up the middle, and Demetrius Jackson and Rodderickus Fanning bouncing outside, B- C moved the ball quickly up field. Screen passes to Hassan Williams and Jonathon Rumph kept the Dreher defense off balance and pushed the Bearcats to the 10- yard line of Dreher.
Quarterback Zack Warner, a sophomore subbing for starter Keyatta Castleberry who suffered a broken finger during the week, then found Rumph open on a corner route for a 10- yard touchdown pass with 2:35 left in the first.
Brookland- Cayce tailback Demetrius Jackson rushes just by the reach of Dreher's Chad Jasper. The next five possessions between the two teams resulted in a punt, two fumbles, and two interceptions as the rain began to take its toll on the ball handling abilities of each team. After Raymon Morris intercepted Dreher's Jacob Gindman with three minutes left in the half, B- C ignored the rain and went exclusively to its passing game. A 23- yard pass to Rumph, a 10- yard pass to Edwin Scott, and an 18- yard pass to Foster Stephens gave B- C a first down inside the Dreher 10- yard line. Fanning took a handoff to the left side and outflanked the Dreher defenders for an eight- yard touchdown and a 14- 0 lead with just 16 seconds remaining in the half.
B- C kicked a 30- yard field goal to open the second half, extending the home team's lead to 17- 0. The Blue Devils responded by packing in its offense and running a 1940s style formation with two tight ends and two wings. Sims, Leonard Kennedy, and Jabril Williams used misdirection and trapping blocks to eke out four or five yards per carry, moving the Blue Devils quickly through the Bearcat defense. A 15- yard Gindman pass to Farrington Huguenin and a 29- yard rumble by Williams, usually a linebacker and the team's leading tackler, set up Gindman's sneak into the end zone for a one- yard touchdown with 2:04 left in the third.
Dreher running back Ardamian Player runs for 29 yards in the first quarter. The Blue Devils tried a sneaky onside kick after bringing the score to 17- 7, but the Bearcats were alert and recovered the kick. After forcing a punt, Dreher got the ball back and went immediately back to the formula that worked so well on their previous possession. Kennedy and Sims carried for good yardage, but a fumble wiped out yet another Blue Devil offensive attack. The fumble was returned for a touchdown by B- C's Rico Jackson but was called back due to a holding penalty.
Undeterred, B- C marched straight down the field with Jackson carrying the load. On the nine- yard line of Dreher, a reverse sent Williams streaking around the right side, untouched into the end zone for a 24- 7 margin for the Bearcats.
Brookland- Cayce clinched a 3A playoff spot with the victory, its third in Region V play, only a year after a 0- 10 season.
