Audra Miner Audra Miner Flora Student named 2008 Russian Scholar Laureate

A.C. Flora High School junior Audra Miner has been named a 2008 Russian Scholar Laureate by the American Council of Teachers of Russia (ACTR).

Miner will receive a letter of commendation, a certificate of award, and an ACTR Russian Scholar Laureate pin.

She has taken Russian language courses for three years and plans to pursue a career in pharmaceuticals after high school.

Carver- Lyon awarded Feder al Safe Routes to Schools Grant

Carver- Lyon Elementary was one of 10 South Carolina schools to be awarded a federal 2008 Safe Routes to School Grant, which will reimburse schools up to $200,000 to develop comprehensive bicycle and pedestrian programs.

Schools can use the funding for engineering and construction projects such as sidewalks, pathways, and signage, as well as educational initiatives.

The project's goals are to get more citizens physically active, relieve traffic congestion, and make all modes of transportation available to communities in an environmentally- friendly manner. Implementation will begin in 2009.
