The Columbia United 99 Girls Blue team, otherwise known as the Wolves, scored 26 goals and, even more impressively, only allowed two goals in four games en route to the 10th Annual Carolina Cup 2008 championship in the under 9 girls division.

The tournament, held at the Columbia United Polo Road complex October 4- 5, featured teams from around the state and Georgia. The Wolves beat three teams from Georgia and a team from Lexington in the finals.

Naomi Matthusen led the Wolves with seven goals and four assists in the tournament. Samantha Shaw added five goals and two assists. Jessie Lunsford scored four goals and collected an assist. Maggie Shaw had three goals and an assist. Elizabeth Howard finished with two goals and two assists, while Loranna Austin also had two goals to go with an assist. Maryellen Campanaro collected a goal and an assist, while Ashley Maddock and Hannah Twine each had one goal. Sarah Brown had two assists, while Sarah Hicks had one assist.

What will not show up in the statistics is the defensive effort put forth by the Wolves. The combination of Hicks, Maddock, and Maggie Shaw at the centerback position shut down opposing offenses.

Goalkeepers Howard, Austin, and Twine also played extremely well. Howard finished with eight saves. Austin had four, and Twine got one save. They recorded two shut- outs and allowed only one goal in each of the final two games.
