Diamonds shine at Flora homecoming
LR wideout Brandon Wilkerson leaps for an 18- yard touchdown in front of A.C. Flora's Tywon Pelzer. Nicholas Smith ran for a touchdown and passed for another to help Lower Richland ruin the homecoming festivities for A.C. Flora at Memorial Stadium on October 3. Smith and the Diamonds effectively controlled possession and used a diverse offensive attack to mute the Falcons, 19- 3.
Each team utilized a no- huddle, spread offense to success in the first quarter, but it was LR who scored first. Having already had a touchdown pass to George Boneparte called back on its first possession, Lower Richland found the end zone via a quarterback sweep to the left by Smith with just 3:18 left in the first quarter. The point after was no good, and the Diamonds led 6- 0.
On its next possession, A.C. Flora was forced to quickly punt but was able to recover a muffed punt at the 15- yard line of LR. A Grant Clayton 32- yard field goal easily split the goal posts to bring Flora within three at 6- 3 with 10:20 left in the half.
Undeterred, Lower Richland responded with an 80- yard drive to gain control of the ballgame. With passes to Travis Sabb, Brandon Wilkerson, and Rochon Johnson, Smith had a bevy of downfield options. In fact, the Diamonds used the passing attack to set up its efficient running game.
Katherine Tribble A.C. Flora Homecoming Queen Delayed handoffs and draw plays to tailbacks Joe Morgan and Keith Skerritt kept the Diamond offense moving and eating up game clock. Skerritt carried for an 18- yard touchdown but was called back due to holding. Without blinking, Smith dropped back on the next play and found Wilkerson for a leaping touchdown reception with 7:35 to play in the first half. Going for two was unsuccessful, and LR led 12- 3.
Neither team found any offensive rhythm for the rest of the half as Lower Richland's defense led by Mark Garrick and Flora's led by Carlos McCoy battered the opposing offenses until the halftime whistle.
The teams again traded punts in the third quarter, though LR did put together one long drive thanks in large part to a 14- yard run on fourth down by Mykell Jacobs. Morgan and Jacobs powered the suddenly ground- oriented Diamonds inside the Flora 25- yard line before a fourth down pass fell incomplete in the end zone to quash the drive.
A.C. Flora's Miss Blue, Julia Theus, and Mr. Scarlet, Morgan Mitchell Early in the fourth quarter after Flora quarterback Drew Desmond had been knocked out of the game on a massive sideline collision with LR's Michael Brown States Clawson took the field as Falcon quarterback. But a poor snap sailed over his head and into his own end zone and was ultimately recovered by Lower Richland's Marvin Smith for a touchdown. With the successful extra point, LR led 19- 3 with ten minutes to play.
Flora put together a really nice drive toward the end of the game behind Clawson's passes to McCoy and with Jermaine Simmons' agile running. Clawson found Haykeem Bouges for a 13- yard touchdown with just over four minutes to play, but the officials considered Bouges' attempt to get open as offensive pass interference, and the play was reversed. Ultimately, Lower Richland's Boneparte caught a pass in the end zone that did count as his interception with just three minutes to play ended the Falcon threat and preserved the Diamonds' third victory.
