October is Domestic Violence Awareness month
More than 33 victims from S.C. lost their lives in the last year to domestic violence
      Attorney General Henry McMaster led participants through the annual Silent Witness Domestic Violence ceremony that was held October 6, 2008, on the South steps of the State House in Columbia.The ceremony marked the first week of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Remember S.C. ranks #2 in the nation for women being killed by men
Most female victims were killed by men they knew
      S. C. is Ranked only behind Nevada in women being killed by men. Violence Policy Center Legislative Director Kristen Rand states, "These findings alarmingly demonstrate how domestic violence can escalate to homicide. More resources need to be made available to protect women and prevent such tragedies.

Mayor's Walk Against Domestic Violence
      Mayor Bob Coble and Councilwoman Tameika Isaac Devine are hosting the 2nd Annual Walk Against Domestic Violence on Saturday, October 11, 2008. This walk is FREE to the public. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the walk will take place at 9 am at Finlay Park (930 Laurel Street).There will also be a Free Information Fair at Finlay Park from 9:30- 11:00 a.m.

Dreher Class of 1958 contributes to foundation
      The Dreher High School Class of 1958 presents a check for $500 to the Dreher Foundation. The check was presented by Class President Porter Kinard to Francie Markham, president of the Dreher Foundation. The Class of 1958 celebrated its 50th Reunion at Forest Lake Country Club in April.

Equestrians win at the N.C. State Championship
     Kaleb Kaiser, age 10 and a student at Glen Forest School road in the Walk and Trot 12- Year- Old Division in the N. C. State Championship. Kaiser took 4th place honors and 4th place in the championship class. With his pony, he took 4th place and rode 3rd place in the championship round.
