Giant grows in Forest Acres

Story and photo by Elise Porter

Sarah Porter holds her monster sweet potato Sarah Porter holds her monster sweet potato Eight- year- old Sarah Porter grew a sweet potato in her backyard in Forest Acres. The monstrosity weighed seven pounds, and was eight inches long and 17 inches around.

Describing what started out as a science experiment, Sarah said, "I bought a potato and put it in a glass jar full of water with three toothpicks (to hold the potato up onto the jar). The potato started growing vines. I kept watering it, and then I planted it. I had to wait for awhile, but this is what it turned into!"

While the original potato swelled into a giant, the vines also produced many other normal- sized potatoes. Porter's potato, as well as several other items from her garden, will be on display at the S.C. State Fair in the Americraft- Can tey Building.
