Demons run over Bearcats
At a wet and soggy Brookland- Cayce field at on Friday night, Septmber 26, the Lugoff- Elgin Demons used a strong running attack to beat the Bearcats 43- 7. Lugoff- Elgin leaned on running backs Trent Hudson and Philip Osborne to carry the team, while Brookland- Cayce pinned their hopes on Kenyatta Castleberry and Demetrius Jackson.
Lugoff- Elgin received the ball to start the game. It seemed the opening drive stalled for the Demons after four plays. On fourth down Lugoff- Elgin lined up to punt, when punter Forrest Koumas took a fake punt 26 yards to keep the drive alive for the Demons. Three plays later, Osborne took a handoff 25 yards for a touchdown. With the extra point, Lugoff Elgin took an early 7- 0 lead.
The Bearcats fought back. After getting the ball at the 30 yard line, Jonathan Rumph threw a lateral to Castleberry who threw the ball downfield to Foster Stephens for a 44- yard gain. Four plays later, the Bearcats punched it in the end zone with a Simeon Twitty one- yard touchdown run. With the extra point, Brookland- Cayce tied the score at 7- 7.
Lugoff- Elgin went three- and- out on their next series, but caught a break when the Bearcats fumbled the ball on their first play. The Demons used a heavy dose of Osborne and Hudson to score on a seven play drive that ended with a Hudson three- yard touchdown. Lugoff- Elgin failed to convert the extra point. The quarter ended with Lugoff Elgin leading 13-7.
After a Brookland- Cayce punt, Lugoff- Elgin opened the second quarter again using the duo of Osborne and Hudson to move the ball. The Demons overcame three different penalties and converted a fourth down to put themselves in position for a 49- yard field goal attempt that kicker Grayson Quick connected on to give the Demons a 16- 7 lead.
Despite two drives deep into Lugoff- Elgin territory, the Bearcats were unable to answer with a score of their own and they remained down nine points at halftime.
The Bearcats went three- and- out to open the half, and as they set up for a punt the ball was snapped over the head of the B- C punter. Lugoff- Elgin recovered the ball at the Bearcat one- yard line. One play later, Koumas scored on a quarterback keeper. The extra point was missed, but Lugoff- Elgin led 22- 7.
Brookland- Cayce started the next drive with great field position at their 40 yard line, but penalties caused the Bearcats to once again go three- and- out.
When the Demons got the ball back, Osborne once more was the workhorse as he moved the ball into Bearcat territory on a series of running plays. Three plays later, Lugoff- Elgin scored on a reverse play in which wide receiver Devonte Alexander took a pitch from Koumas and ran 33 yards for the score. Julian Baxter converted the two point conversion to increase the lead to 30- 7.
Another three- and- out for Brookland- Cayce led to a blocked punt that was recovered by the Demons at the Bearcat 11 yard line. Three plays later, Osborne scored his second touchdown of the evening with a seven yard run. The extra point was missed, giving Lugoff Elgin a 36- 7 lead.
The Demons continued their dominance in the fourth quarter when Anthony Myers intercepted Castleberry. Lugoff- Elgin moved the ball into Brookland- Cayce territory before having to settle for a field goal attempt. A bad snap ended in a touchdown pass from Will Graham to Campbell Connell. The extra point was good making the score 43- 7. A pair of turnovers and a short drive by Brookland- Cayce played out the rest of the game, as Lugoff- Elgin celebrated the big win.
