Aubrey Franklin Addy

Mr. Aubrey Franklin Addy, a resident of Laurel Crest Retirement Center for 14 years, died Saturday, September 27, 2008, at the age of 105. Born in Peak, S.C., on November 20, 1902, he was a son of the late James B. and Martha Haltiwanger Addy.

Aubrey was the last surviving City of Columbia street car conductor. He was a dedicated employee of South Carolina Electric and Gas Company for 40 years, retiring in 1967. Following that, he was employed by Talbert- Shives Funeral Home for approximately 30 years, retiring a second time at the age of 95.

Mr. Addy was a faithful member of Reformation Lutheran Church since 1936, serving 27 years on Church Council and also served as Sunday School Superintendent. Active in Masonry, he was the oldest living member of the Earlewood Lodge of which he was a charter member and Worshipful Master.

Mr. Addy served the Grand Lodge of S.C. as Senior Grand Deacon (1961- 62) and the Tenth Masonic District as District Deputy Grand Master (1975- 76). He was presented a life membership in the York Rite by the Columbia Bodies in 1999.

Mr. Addy was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Thelma Fulmer Addy. Surviving are his children and their spouses, Audrey A. and Charles H. Cate of Columbia and Wayne F. and Gloria Williamson Addy of Parker, Colo.; grandchildren Charles H. (Sue) Cate Jr., N. Perry (Katie) Cate, A. Franklin (Margaret) Cate, Stacey A. (David) Grooms, Scott F. (Kim) Addy; great- grandchildren; Hardie, Susannah, Perry Jr., Emily, David, and Elizabeth Grace Cate, Rachel and J. T. Grooms, and Aubrey Addy.

Mr. Addy is also survived by his youngest brother, Julian B. (Lou) Addy and was predeceased by siblings, Evans Addy, Inez Shealy, Wilborn Addy, Rev. Virgil Addy, George Addy, Harvey Addy, Reba Monts, Katherine Derrick, and Mary Edna Rogers.

The family is grateful to Heartland Hospice caregivers and the staff of Laurel Crest who have so faithfully cared for their loved one through the years. A special "thank you" to Kent Leaphart who was Mr. Addy's constant friend at Laurel Crest.

The funeral service was held at 3 o'clock, Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at The First Presbyterian Church with visitation at 2 o'clock in the Atrium of Jackson Hall. The Rev. Neal R. Mathias officiated. Burial followed at Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church Cemetery, Chapin, S.C. Shives Funeral Home is assisting the family.
