Those not at the meeting were Roger Dew, Alice Thorsenson, and Bruce Holland. Ray Derrick entertained members of The Explorers Club at their monthly meeting with a slideshow of his latest African safari. On a tour led by Alan Shoemaker, he and 12 people from Columbia visited three major wildlife parks in Tanzania: Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro. For most of the trip, they were divided into three groups, each with a vehicle and a local guide.

guide.

They saw and photographed most of the usual African animals. Ray particularly liked the hyenas. He said, "They are the filthiest animals in the world."He also photographed warthogs and noticed none had on lipstick.

His most amazing photograph was one of an imaginary leopard in a sausage tree at sunset. "See his tail hanging down in the crotch of the tree and his paw behind the limb!?" And who knew sausages grew on trees in Africa?
