Davis Lemon ran for 88 yards and two touchdowns, and Cardinal Newman forced five turnovers in a 28- 0 whitewashing of Florence Christian on Homecoming, Friday, September 19.

The Cardinals (2- 2) controlled the ball for over 29 minutes, thanks to those five turnovers and an aggressive pass defense, which caused the Eagles (1- 3) to finish 8- for- 23 passing. The Cardinals turned three of those turnovers into 21 points, and they did not punt in the first half.

After forcing an Eagle punt on third down from the Florence Christian one, the Cardinals started deep in Eagle territory and needed only seven plays to score their first touchdown. Lemon ran the ball in from 12 yards out, and after the extra point, Cardinal Newman led 7- 0.

With 1:34 left in the half, Florence Christian mounted one of their two threats of the game. They drove the ball 50 yards in just over a minute and had first- and- goal at the Cardinal 16. Wilson threw his second interception, however, and Michael Beaudoin returned it 36 yards to the Cardinal 37.

Cardinal quarterback Tommy Winterstein then threw an interception down the right side, but the call was nullified by a roughing the passer penalty. With three seconds left in the half, Winterstein threw a long pass down the left side that fell neatly into the arms of the streaking Winstead, who outran the Eagle defenders to the end zone and a 14- 0 lead at halftime.

After the Cardinals punted at the end of a six-minute drive to start the second half, Wilson threw his third interception on the Eagles' first play, this one to Michael Bolchoz, who returned it to the 20. Two plays later, Bolchoz scored on a one- yard plunge to give the Cardinals a 21- 0 lead. On the ensuing drive, Florence Christian was forced to punt, and Winstead returned this one 35 yards to the Eagle 15, but for the fourth time, the Cardinals turned it over on downs. But Wilson threw his fourth and final interception on the next play, and Winstead returned it 31 yards to the Eagle four. Lemon raced around the right end for the touchdown for the 28- 0 score.

All that was left was to preserve the shutout. The Cardinal Newman defense bent, allowing the Eagles to get to the Cardinal 8 yard line, but then stopped the Eagles on fourth- and- goal to register the goose egg.

Bolchoz led the Cardinal defense with ten tackles. Winterstein threw for 150 yards, and Winstead had 177 total yards on returns and receptions. Wilson rushed for 72 yards and passed for 76 to lead the Eagles.

Miss Stephanie Marsha was voted Homecoming Queen, and Miss Caitie McFarland was voted Miss Sweetheart.
