Jonathon Rumph's 13- yard touchdown reception with three seconds left in the first half gave Brookland- Cayce all the scoring it would need to win its first game since October 20, 2006. The Bearcats scored twice more in the fourth quarter and defeated Columbia 20- 6 on September 19 at Memorial Stadium. The loss was the first regular season loss for Columbia since October 13, 2006.

Columbia started the game's scoring late in the first quarter with a five- yard Chris Payne touchdown run. The Capitals went for it on fourth- and- one twice inside the 25- yard line and were successful each time, setting up the touchdown. The extra point was blocked, however, and the Captitals led 6- 0. Brookland- Cayce struggled to create offense throughout the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Payne ran to his right and was tackled near the visiting sideline. He did not get up for over five minutes as trainers from both teams assessed what ended up being a season ending broken ankle. Payne was carried off the field and spent the rest of the night on crutches, adding to the Columbia injury woes which included Damario Jeffrey's recently torn ACL.

Neither team could muster much by way of offense for nearly ten minutes, exchanging punts on each successive possession. Finally, with just two minutes to play in the half, the Bearcats made their move. Sideline passes from Kenyatta Castleberry to Rumph and Hassan Williams brought Brookland- Cayce 53 yards downfield to the Capitals' 13- yard line. Castleberry's lob to the front left corner of the end zone with just three seconds left found the hands of Rumph and a 7- 6 lead for the second consecutive week.

Twice in the third quarter Columbia put together solid drives that gave them opportunities inside the Brookland- Cayce 10- yard line. A 28- yard run by Antonio Wilson set up the first try but Rumph intercepted Kynicholas Tyler at the five- yard line ending the threat. Late in the third, James Wagner carried several times to give Columbia the ball at the nine- yard line. But a Columbia fumble at the one- yard line was recovered by B- C's Gollie Felder to save the Bearcats once again.

A 40- yard pass to Rumph opened up the field for Brookland- Cayce on third down from the five- yard line. A 10- yard pass and a 21- yard pass to Rumph, and a pass interference call against the Capitals brought the ball deep into Columbia's red zone. Castleberry dove in from one- yard out to give the visi- tors a 13- 6 lead with 7:24 to play.

Columbia was forced to punt on its next drive, giving B- C the ball at the 50- yard line. Demetrius Jackson and Rodderickus Fanning powered the Bearcat running game and an offside penalty against Columbia on a B- C punt kept the visitors moving. As the Bearcats tried to run out the clock on their victory, Fanning burst through the Capital defense for a 36- yard touchdown with just 1:09 left, giving B- C its final 20- 6 margin.

Clearly the absence of Columbia's two best players hurt the Capitals, but Brookland- Cayce played hard and took advantage of the opportunities given them to earn the historic win.
