B- C to host 2nd Annual Smith Memorial Tourney
Charwood Country Club will be the site for the 2nd Annual Smith Memorial Tournament on Saturday, September 20. A one o'clock shotgun start will bring together an anticipated field of 13 high school girls' golf teams from across the state.
The second- year event's field has more than doubled in size since last year and will continue to fulfill the goals that Brookland- Cayce's coach Roger Smith originally intended. Smith states, "My parents were the biggest supporters of the Brookland- Cayce golf program, and this is a way to honor their memory and continue to thank them for their support. Having both parents die from cancer in the last few years inspired me to utilize my resources to make something positive come out of the sadness my family and I went through," continued Smith.
"The tournament does that by providing an opportunity to raise young ladies' awareness of breast cancer, give additional golf tournament experience to high school girls' golf programs, and we have a lot of fun during the tournament."
Not only are prizes given for the top two golf teams and individuals, but awards for closest to the pin, long drive, and the best pink outfit are given.
All players, coaches and volunteers are encouraged to wear pink for the day.
One hundred percent of the team entry fees will go to the Rally for the Cure Campaign as well as any additional donations that are collected.
Rock Lucas, owner of Charwood Country Club, is very supportive of having the event at the 27- hole course.
"It is a great cause, and Charwood is a wonderful course to host the event. We are walker- friendly, spectator- friendly, and we enjoy being able to help others raise funds for their worthy causes."
Schools in this year's event include Airport, Brookland- Cayce, Chapin, Dreher, Dutch Fork, Fort Dorchester, Gilbert, Richland Northeast, Ridge View, South Aiken, Spring Valley, and Strom Thurmond.
