Women, get out of the home and into the House
S.C. ranks last in women in elected offices
      Political participation among South Carolina women is low, and three local organizations are doing something about it. Approximately 300 women registered for a reception hosted on September 10 by the Southeastern Institute for Women in Politics, the Alliance for Women, and the South Carolina League of Women Voters.

Women in the United States Congress: 1917- 2008
      Ninety one women serve in the 110th Congress: 75 in the House (55 Democrats and 20 Republicans) and 16 in the Senate (11 Democrats and 5 Republicans). A record 94 women have served during the 110th Congress, but three died during the first session, Juanita Millender- McDonald (D- CA), Jo Ann Davis (R- VA), and Julia Carson (D- IN).

Carolyn Jeanette Smith
      Carolyn Jeanette Smith, 68, of Powell Rd., Mill Spring, N.C. died Sunday evening, September 14, 2008, in St. Luke's Hospital in Columbus, N.C. Born in Transylvania County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Norman and Nellie Allison Sienseng. Mrs. Smith was a member of Lynn First Baptist Church in Lynn, N.C.

Mildred Hughey Neil
      Memorial service for Mildred Hughey Neil, 90, of the Presbyterian Home in Lexington, was held Tuesday September 16 at 11 am at Shandon Presbyterian Church. Serving as honorary pallbearers were members of the Ed Anderson Class. The burial was private. The visitation was Monday 5- 7 pm at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.
