Newberry College inducts Dr. Tom Crump in its athletic hall of fame
Dr. Tom Crump was inducted into the Newberry College Athletic Hall of Fame August 22, 2008.
Crump came to Newberry College in 1960 from Rock Hill High School where he was an All State basketball player. While attending Newberry, he lettered in basketball each of his four years and was a starter for three years.
As a freshman, Crump played on the 1960-61 NAIA Championship Basketball Team that participated in the National Championship in Kansas City. He was selected as a member of the All Conference and All Tournament Teams for two years and was a member of the team that won two Little Four Championships. During his three years as a starter, he averaged 13 points per game and had a field goal percentage of 47 percent and a free percentage of 77 percent per game.
After graduation, Crump began a career in teaching, coaching, and administration. His basketball teams won three conference championships. He was selected as the assistant coach in the North- South All Star Game in 1975 and the head coach of the winning South Squad in 1990. He was inducted into the Newberry College Men's Basketball Alumni Association Hall of Fame and the Mid Carolina High School Basketball Hall of Fame. Crump was principal at Mid Carolina High School and Spring Valley High School. He received his masters degree in 1976, educational specialist degree in 1990 and was awarded the doctor of education in 1994. Crump is a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where he has served on numerous committees and as president of the Men of St. Paul's and a church council member.
