      Councilman Kirkman Finley tells us that "statewide, S.C. is # 4 in the country in property crimes and # 2 in violent crimes, 766 per 100,000 which is second to the District of Columbia, the nation's worst violent crime rate." ( The Columbia Star, August 29, 2008, p. 4.).

      When my dad was alive he had very fond memories of me as a child. He didn't remember me climbing to the top of dressers and china cabinets pretending to be one of the monkeys I used to watch on Wild Kingdom. He had no recollection of my forward flips from our upstairs loft onto the first floor couch.

The cop who couldn't cut it
      The little guy near the front row is a dead ringer for Barney Fife, the deputy who worked for television's Sheriff Andy Taylor in the Town of Mayberry. This guy's police uniform is loaded with patches and pins. On his belt is the usual: gun, speed loaders, handcuffs, plus a set of nunchaku used by martial arts folks.

      Before text messaging and phones as IPODs, the primary revenue stream for telecommunications companies was long distance calls. During the 70s, Bellsouth got legendary football coach Paul Bryant to do a commercial for them. The grizzled old coach mumbled about how the administration encouraged incoming freshmen to call home frequently and stay in touch with family.
