Commission approves map amendment
Roll call
The West Columbia Planning Commission met on Monday, August 27, 2008 at 6 pm. All members were present: Chairman William C. Etheredge, Vice Chairman W.J. "Buck" Buchanan, Preston Cantrell, Elizabeth "Liz" Deas, Julie Huffman, Harold Prater, and Billy Lynn Williams. The minutes from the previous meeting were approved with no additions or corrections.
Public Hearing on a Map Amendment to Establish Portions of the Lesley Drive and Meadow Lane Area as R3 (Low Density Residential)
Zoning Administrator Brian E. Carter, presenting the staff analysis, explained to the commission that the properties 104, 106, 108, 212, 216, 220, 224, and 308 Lesley Drive and 2507 and 2503 Meadow Lane had been annexed August 5, 2008. All properties were zoned as restricted development properties under Lexington County's classification system. The properties were generally single- family homes. The Lesley Drive and Meadow Lane area has maintained its residential character, even as there are several businesses nearby, making the designation of R- 3(Low Density Residential) ideal. Carter noted that while most families in the affected area had supported the plan, one had chosen not to come into West Columbia at the present time. Carter concluded saying the public had been notified of the public hearing. Buchanan asked if having a single family not come into the city with the others presented challenges in terms of utilities and other concerns. Carter agreed that this was the case.
Community support for proposal
Ms. Willis of Lesley Drive spoke in favor of the plan, emphasizing that West Columbia would offer strong security for her neighborhood. Vote on proposal and adjournment
With no one speaking in opposition, the commissioners voted on the map amendment and approved it unanimously. City council will take up the commission's recommendation at their next meeting. The next meeting is September 22. Chairman Etheredges said he had a prior commitment and that Vice Chairman Buchanan will run the meeting in his absence. Having no further business, the commission adjourned at 6:17 pm.
