Beidler responds to Ferguson story
My name is Frank Beidler IV. I'm named after the gentleman (Frank Beidler I) that Warner Montgomery profiled in his article about Ferguson. In my mind I've tried to imagine what life would have been like in the hustle and bustle of Ferguson 100 years ago. It sure looks different now.

No brickyard at Ferguson, just watermelons
Thank you for the great articles about Ferguson. I visited Ferguson in January and February. At that time everyone said there was a brickyard at Ferguson. I talked with Rut Connor (former owner of Rocks Pond) about two months ago and he emphatically told me there never was a brickyard there.

Correction
In the August 15th issue of The Columbia Star, there is an article on Mrs. South Carolina, Dr. Garianne Gunter. The article mentions that Dr. Gunter received her MD from the Medical University of South Carolina. In fact, Dr. Gunter received her MD from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. I know this because I participated in Dr. Gunter's training.

Other S.C. colleges deserve credit
In your 08/22/08 issue on p. 1 of the B section, you had a brief article entitled "Attention Wofford Alumni." Ironically, earlier today (08/21/08) the Erskine NetNews (erskine.edu then click on NetNews on the left side) reported tiny Erskine College in wee Due West also finished in the top 100 (95th).

Taxpayers owe billions
Thanks for the excellent piece on "New Economics" in Columbia. This phrase triggered recollections of the bond issue debate: "So, that's $381 million paid out by the taxpayers of Richland One for the 17 structures." Technically speaking, did not the taxpayers borrow $381 million for the projects, pledging to pay back something on the order of $650 million?

Consider the whole, not just the few
The citizens and taxpayers should be the number one priority when accepting bids for major projects. How can anyone justify the decision to accept inflated construction bids of approx $1 million a piece for the main street project and the riverfront park project based on the premise that minorities and female owned businesses haven't been included.

Organization forces yard conformity
I read your article "It was a jungle out there," and was distressed, but not surprised, to see there is actually an organization designed to force yard conformity on all citizens.

Thirty- something speaks
Bob Costas, make way for Keith Jackson
I must admit I enjoyed the Olympics, but I've just got one thing to say, "THANK GOD IT'S COLLEGE FOOTBALL SEASON!" If the Chinese did one thing right, it was plan the games so they ended before Steve Spurrier tossed his first visor or Lee Corso made his first prediction wearing a mascot's tiger head.

Driver sets new record
State police attempt to pull Boatwright over after he changes lanes several times, running other cars off the interstate. He finally stops when he slams into a highway information sign on I- 95 in Rhode Island. Boatwright struggles to get out of his car. Even with the help of troopers, the 300- pounder falls flat on his back as he climbs out of his four- door sedan.

It's not a criticism, it's an observation.
Summarizing the Olympics
When the ancient Greeks decided to host the first Olympiad, I'm not sure they had this in mind. The original plan involved athletes battling each other for the sake of competition and bragging rights. Then they all went off and drank beer together to celebrate the purity of sport.
