Five Points School Supply Drive collects over 6,500 items for needy children
The Five Points School Supply Drive, held on August 1, 2008, once again attracted numerous giving Columbians to the fountain in Five Points. The donations totaled 6, 534 separate items that were divided equally between Rosewood Elementary, Hand Middle and the Alston Wilkes Society. The supplies, which were delivered on Tuesday August 5, will be used for children and teachers in the area.
"We are so grateful to receive this many supplies. Our children will be able to go back to school prepared and feeling equipped to start the school year off right" said Kim White, director of Therapeutic Foster Care at the Alston Wilkes Society. "The Five Points Association's efforts to help the community and its children will be remembered throughout the year."
As the donations came in during the event, patrons and donors enjoyed a rewarding evening in Five Points. Children and parents were delighted by the host of free activities including face painting, caricature drawings, and fantastic balloon creations. In addition, all who contributed received an "I donated" sticker that entitled them to generous offerings and rewards from the Five Points merchants.
Last year's school supply drive was also successful, boasting more than 2,000 separate items donated. The goal this year was to exceed last year's amount by more than half. With over 6,500 school supplies donated, the event was an incredible success for the children of the community.
