LTC Charles R. Funk, III and Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer Joshua Burgess, a doctoral student in history at USC, has been named the first recipient of the John G. Sproat Summer Dissertation Fellowship. This will enable Burgess to travel to Washington, D.C., to do research at the Catholic Archives, Library of Congress, and the Folger Library.

LTC Charles R. Funk, III of Columbia has been presented a certificate in recognition of his contributions to the South Carolina State Guard as an instructor of Army Controls and the Captains' Career Course for the detachment. LTC Funk is retired from the United States Air Force.

Janice Stoudemire Dr. Patrick Malone, an associate professor of psychology at USC, has been awarded a five- year grant of $800,000 from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to study adolescent substance abuse.
