Columbia High graduate commands helicopter Anti- Submarine Squadron Light 42
      Commander Dana R. Gordon relieved Commander Richard A. Skiff Jr. as Command Officer of the helicopter Anti- Submarine Squadron Light 42. He is the first African American to hold this position. Gordon accepted the position with the reading of orders and remarks.

Eastminster congregation votes to give
      The congregation of Eastminster Presbyterian Church voted unanimously to pledge $250,000 to the proposed Midlands Transition Center for the homeless in Columbia Sunday morning, August 10.

South University's College of Nursing comes to Columbia
      South University's College of Nursing announces approval by the South Carolina State Board of Nursing to admit the university's first nursing class in South Carolina in the spring of 2009. South University is now enrolling students to complete pre- requisite courses.

Hammond student wins 2008 Graceful Envelope Contest
     Madison Cotterill, a sixth grader at Hammond School and daughter of Mark Cotterill and Janna McMahan, was selected as one of the children's winners of the 2008 Graceful Envelope Contest, sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers and administered by the Washington Calligraphers Guild. Artist celebrates 20 years
      Jim Harrison Gallery in Denmark, S.C., will kick off a celebration of its 20th anniversary in August 2008. The celebration begins on Sunday, August 17 from 1 pm until 4 pm to be followed by an event each month (Sundays from 1 pm until 4 pm) during the anniversary celebration year. During these events, Jim Harrison will be in the gallery to meet Gallery patrons.

      A USDA study ranks S.C. second in the nation for food insecurity in other words not knowing there will be enough food to meet nutritional needs. The Harvest Hope Food Bank staff members are working to help meet the needs of many people who deal with food insecurity every day.
