Spartanburg jumped on Richland starter Kyle Williamson early as Alex Dozier led off the game with a single, then later scored on Luke Danielwicz's sacrifice fly. Later in the top of the first, Kyle Worthy's single to center field scored Sloan Gilliam giving Spartanburg an early 2- 0 lead.

The Pathfinders answered in the bottom of the second inning when Chris Daniels doubled down the left field line and later scored on Alston James's single up the middle. Then Will Freeman scored when Kevin O'Quinn drew a bases loaded walk to tie the score at 2- 2.

Williamson and Spartanburg pitcher David Hazelton took command and neither team scored again until the top of the sixth inning. Brian Potrat led off the inning with a double then scored on a Richland error. Spartanburg would get another run in the seventh inning when Dozier's sacrifice fly plated Danielwicz to give Spartanburg the 4- 2 lead.

Will Freeman runs out a double in the sixth inning against Spartanburg.
Facing lefty Spartanburg relief pitcher Ian McKinney in the bottom of the eighth inning, Richland missed a golden opportunity. Freeman and Doug Allen led off the inning with walks. James advanced them both with a sacrifice bunt. Robert Gibbes then hit a ground ball to third base and Freeman got caught in a rundown. O'Quinn then ripped a ball down the third base line, but Andrew Patterson made a diving grab and threw out O'Quinn at first base to end the inning. Richland had no answer after that.
