Homeless man works for change that lasts
Eric "Protein" Moseley, who has been homeless most of his life is the subject the film Down But Not Out produced in Columbia by SC ETV. Eric "Protein" Moseley has been homeless most of his life. He has traveled from city to city across the country with a vision of communicating the real life situations of homeless people to the public. He has produced two popular documentaries.
Skid Row Journey , his first video documentary, took place on the streets of Los Angeles. His second documentary, Down (But Not Out,) was produced in Columbia, S.C. and aired by South Carolina Educational Television April 29, 2008. It was produced by a team of ETV cameramen following Protein (as he prefers to be called) around through his typical day in Columbia. Viewers see and appreciate those churches and organizations that have soup kitchens, the importance of the Winter Shelter recently opened by the city, and the shelter and computer access provided by the public library facilities.
Dave Adams of SCETV worked with Protein on Down (But not Out) and says, "The idea was truly to give viewers an experiential documentary on being homeless in Columbia. So we simply followed Protein around throughout his day and captured it all… In that experience we met many street people who had varying attitudes toward their situation and to us."
Protein is very articulate and looks beyond his humble state in life to call for effective change from city and state leaders. Adams adds, "Protein is a rare breed who actually foresees an opportunity to bring about change and has set upon a path to accomplish that (through his documentaries). Whereas many of the people on the streets were diligent about conveying their own situation and downright aggressive about convincing us that they were in need, Protein was more about the big picture and interested in pursuing concepts that actually help folks in the long run." He has sacrificed time and much effort to produce these documentaries. When asked to describe Protein, Adams says he is "genuine, committed, and humble."
As is written in the Los Angeles press, "Even though Moseley's film will not be screening at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, he will still be a motivation for someone to continue on with their dreams, ... not matter what."
