Richland Sertoma Club kicks off Sportsarama
The 48th annual Sportsarama, the high school football jamboree cosponsored by Richland School District One and the Richland Sertoma Club, kicks off Saturday, August 16 at Memorial Stadium. Four pre- season exhibition games are scheduled this year with activities beginning at 5:40 pm.
Teams featured this year are •Whitmire vs. CA Johnson, 6:00 •Eau Claire vs Lower Richland, 6:45 •Dreher vs WJ Keenan, 7:30 •Columbia vs AC Flora, 8:15
Each game will consist of two ten minute quarters with two timeouts per game. All other S.C. High School League rules will be followed.
During Sportsarama, the club will crown Mr. and Miss Sportsarama. Winners are chosen from students nominated by each participating high school. Nomi- nees are judged on the basis of scholarship and school/community involvement. The Sertoma Club also awards spirit, band and cheerleading trophies.
There is designated seating by school, with tickets costing $5 each. Richland Sertoma Club sells concessions and Sportarama programs.
Proceeds benefit the participating schools and speech and hearing impaired charitable organizations sponsored by the Richland Sertoma Club.
"This year, Dr. Carlos Smith and District One officials decided to start the event a little later to avoid some of the late afternoon heat," said Jack Sterne, Richland Sertoma Club Sportsarama chair. "We are looking forward to a successful event, one that will be enjoyable for participants and spectators. Many family members attend this annual event to support their teams and their children. We are also grateful to the Columbia Police Department for helping provide security so everyone will be safe and comfortable."
