Legislative leaders buck economic fall
      North Carolina unemployment hit 6 percent in June, and the nation's unemployment rate stayed at 5.5 percent in June, the same as in May, although jobs in June fell by 62,000 nationally. South Carolina's unemployment rate for June was 6.2 percent, still among the highest in the region and the nation.

      Spending The state faces an additional $140 million revenue shortfall, which brings the total shortfalls for the current budget year to $320 million. The state's budget for 2007- 2008 ended the year with a $100 million deficit. For 2006- 2007, the state had a $1.3 billion surplus. The state budget is almost $7 billion.

Agency launches new online Medicaid provider transparency tool
      South Carolinians now have a new tool to find out how their tax dollars are being spent thanks to a website that shows how much individual health care providers earn through the state's $5.4 billion Medicaid program. The searchable database is pulled from the 25 million claims paid to nearly 30,000 South Carolina health care providers last year.
