At 3 pm, July 21, 2008, a bolt of lightning struck a tall fir tree at the corner of Maple and Monroe Streets in Shandon. The tree smashed into a telephone pole, then rode the power lines down into Monroe. Telephone, electricity, and cable lines flew in all directions cutting off power to several blocks of Monroe and Heyward Streets.
