Project Funway features original designs

Contributed by the Columbia Museum of Art

Perry Lynn Wright Perry Lynn Wright Project Funway at the Columbia Museum of Art was a three- day workshop inspired by Bravo channel's hit show Project Runway. Participants in the workshop created a vest or dress of paper inspired by art in

the exhibition Carolina

Collects. Students spent time in the galleries looking for color and design ideas. They sketched, cut patterns, and assembled their pieces. No sewing was required. The workshop culminated with a fashion show in the galleries.

The 2nd Annual Project Funway Fashion Show featured Sara Argo, Alice Bowie, Katelyn Deas, Kelsey Graham, Julia Miller, Inez Nicholson, Irene Nicholson, Linsy Potterfield, Judy Rhee, Sally Rhee, Chloe Rothstein, and Perry Lynn Wright.

The models commented about their dresses on the Funway:

My name is Perry Lynn Wright. I got my idea from a painting named "Lower Manhattan" by Ed Yaghjian. I love horseback riding, bareback riding, and basketball. Hi!

My name is Chloe Rothstein. I am ten years old and a rising fifth grader at Rosewood Elementary. I enjoy reading and art of any kind. My dress was inspired by two European art works, one called "Flowers," by Henri Fantin-Latour, the second, "Untitled," by Richard Anuskewicz.

Chloe Rothstein Chloe Rothstein My name is Sal ly Rhee. I like singing and I'm eight- years- old. I named my dress "Rainbow Riding." The name of the painting is "Zone," and it has many circles.

My name is Katie Deas. My favorite things are playing with friends, art, and playing soccer. The dress that I made is inspired by a painting called "Sky Windows." I liked the stripe idea and the colors. I'm glad I'm a part of this and the camp. Thank you!

My name is Kelsey Graham. I'm eight- years- old. I'm a rising fourth grader. Why I'm inspired by the dress is the little boxes. My dress is inspired by Richard Anuskiewicz in 1969.

My name is Sara Argo. I like to do baton and gymnastics. I am going into the fourth grade. And "Sky Window" inspired me to make this dress.

My name is Judy Rhee. I'm 11- years- old. My dress's mane is a purple star because my main idea is a star and the color purple. I made the idea from "Portrait of Mrs. Dorothy Hodges," "Church of the Madeleine," "Le Grand Jockey," "Quill," and my imagination.

Sally Rhee Sally Rhee My name is Inez Nicholson and I am going into the seventh grade. This dress was inspired by "Untitled," by Fredric Ost, and "Sky Window," by Gene Davis. I enjoyed the pattern and colors in both of the art pieces.

My name is Irene Nicholson. I am going into the fifth grade. I like soccer and art. This dress was inspired by "Sky Window." I liked the stripes and the squares.

My name is Jul ia Miller. I like tap, karate, horseback riding, and swimming. This dress was inspired by an Asian vase of a dragon. I love the way this dress looks and feels so powerful. To me, it is a signal to be strong.

My name is Alice Bowie. I live in Mississippi. I was inspired by all the colors. The first thing I was inspired by was "Sky Window," 1981. The second thing I was inspired by was "Zone," 2004. I love my dress.

My name is Linsy Potter field. I'm a rising fourth grader. I go to Heathwood Hall. The painting is "Broken Beads," made in 1986 by Gronk. The beads looked like polka dots and the pink inspired me.
