      The Columbia S tar has expanded its sales staff to better accommodate the businesses in the Columbia area. The new advertising manager is Linda Sosbee who can be contacted at 771-0219 or lindas@sc.rr.com. The sales representatives include Gail Trebuchon, Russell Wright, Marsha Preston, and Mike Cox.

The Columbia Star Assistant to the Editor
      Pamela Edwards has joined The Columbia Star family as assistant to the editor. She was born in Asheville, N.C., and lived most of her life in Western North Carolina. She owns family land in Polk County, N.C. Pamela has been in the newspaper business for 10 years. She worked at the Tryon Daily Bulletin before following her fiance, Hugh, to Columbia.

The Columbia Star
      The Columbia Star is the oldest locally- owned newspaper in Columbia. It began as The Star Reporter at 716 Santee Avenue in 1963 with three people: Miller Montgomery, and Harold and Mary Booker. In 1998, the company moved to 723 Queen Street and the new owners Warner Montgomery and Mimi Maddock changed the name to The Columbia Star.

SUMC's Outreach Commission says thank you
      Shandon United Methodist Church's Outreach Commission teamed up with the American Red Cross to give people the gift of life July 13, 2008, at the church. Pictured above giving blood are are Jonathan Roquemore (l) and Wade Carlisle. Nurses Amanda Kolesar and Bernice Smith are helping. Donors gave well over 21 units.

Special activities include the 33rd annual Atalaya Arts & Crafts Festival set for Sept. 26- 28 in the unique "castle" by that name at Huntington Beach State Park.

Wind & Unwind presents Islam and the Middle East
      Close to 80 people listened to and questioned local resident Zara Rabnawaz at the Capital Senior Center's monthly lecture series Wind & Unwind last week. Rabnawaz, a business analyst with Computer Sciences Corporation, was transferred to Columbia 30 years ago and became a citizen in the early 90s.

MTC instructor receives Regional Teaching Excellence Award for second time
      Melvin O. Hawkins Jr., interim department chair for Business and Public Service at Midlands Technical College, recently received the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) Southeastern Teaching Excellence Award in New Orleans, Louisiana. Hawkins also received the ACBSP Regional Teaching Excellence Award in 2005.

Was zoo hippo named after the publisher of The Columbia Star?
      After I returned from my Peace Corps tour of duty in Thailand and continued my teaching career at A.C. Flora High School, I developed a strange fixation on hippos. For years I collected hippo memorabilia. Anything resembling a hippo or anything with a hippo on it, I added to my collection which became known far and wide.

Red Cross helps Midlands' families recover from storm damage
      The American Red Cross of Central South Carolina is providing emergency aid to residents in the Midlands displaced by Monday's storms. The American Red Cross of Central South Carolina dispatched volunteers to disaster scenes throughout the Midlands to provide immediate, disaster- related assistance.

Carolina Children's Home holds Back to School Drive
      Carolina Children's Home is hosting its annual Back to School Drive fundraiser and supply drive through September 1 in preparation of sending more than 85 children and adolescents back to school. Supplies and funds will be accepted at the Home's Administration Building, which is at the corner of Sunnyside Drive and Felix Road, between the hours of 9 am and 5 pm.

New way to enforce stopping
      At 3 pm, July 21, 2008, a bolt of lightning struck a tall fir tree at the corner of Maple and Monroe Streets in Shandon. The tree smashed into a telephone pole, then rode the power lines down into Monroe. Telephone, electricity, and cable lines flew in all directions cutting off power to several blocks of Monroe and Heyward Streets.
