Military music arches over Columbia
      Veteran band man Paul Pickens orchestrated musical military history July 12- 13, 2008. For seven years Pickens, a WWII tuba player, has organized the WWII 42nd Rainbow Infantry Division Band reunion in Columbia, usually in spring.

Volunteer goes to Honduras to help at the Farm of the Child
      St. David's Episcopal Church will host "A Taste of Columbia," on July 29 as a fundraiser for a young woman who is leaving the country to volunteer at an orphanage in Honduras called the Farm of the Child. Jennie Motto organized "A Taste of Columbia" as part of her effort to raise $13,000 to cover the cost of her commitment.

Field Trip Fridays with Historic Columbia Foundation
      "Field Trip Fridays" will be held each Friday through August 29 at the Hampton- Preston Mansion, 1615 Blanding Street. Participants will receive an introduction to archaeology and discuss the importance of the archaeology project on the grounds of the Hampton- Preston Mansion. Families, children and adults are welcome.

      Ann Elizabeth Shaw and John Hardin Reading were united in marriage at 6 pm, Saturday, July 12, 2008, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Sumter. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Ervin Shaw of Sumter, the granddaughter of Mrs. George Mendel Lay and the late Mr. Lay of Loris and Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Burns Shaw of Sumter.

James Erwin Smith
      Almighty God, in His wisdom and mercy received unto Himself James Erwin Smith on Monday, July 7, 2008. Mr. Smith was born January 5, 1929, in Columbia, S.C. A service of Celebration of Eternal Life was held Thursday, July 10, 2008, at 2 pm at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, Columbia. Visitation followed in the church reception room.

Reunion brings 500 together
      When members of one of America's largest families, the Martin family, have a reunion, this is no ordinary family reunion and not the usual weekend barbeque. This year, 500 strong gathered at the Radisson Hotel for the 40th annual reunion. Twenty states were represented. One member, Lt. Commander Elicia Rogers came from Spain.

      Carolina Wildlife Care will hold its fourth Annual Purple Martin Cruise aboard the Southern Patriot July 30, 2008, 7- 9:30 pm. Light hors d'oeuvres, wine, beer, and other beverages will be served. Music will also be provided during the cruise.
