Gamecocks taking field at RCPL

Headmaster refuses teacher raise
     Matthew Hurtt of Covenant Classical Christian School was headmaster Photo courtesy of Randy A. Hurtt for a day. His first directive was an executive email to all teachers granting an extra 10 minutes of recess to all classes and an extra 10 minutes at lunch for all students. When one of the teachers came to his office to ask for a raise, he said, "I'm sorry. That's not in the budget."

Board seeks input on request to name gym for former coach
      The Richland One Board of School Commissioners is seeking public input on a request to name the new gymnasium at Eau Claire High School in honor of George Glymph. Glymph, a 1961 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, is a former Eau Claire High teacher and coach.

Richland One receives national recognition
      Marketing materials produced by Richland One's Office of Communications have received national recognition for excellence in school public relations. The National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) announced that the Richland One: Discover the Urban Advantage CDROM has received an Award of Excellence through the organization's 2008 awards competition.

Community Foundation awards over $100,000 in scholarships
      Central Carolina Community Foundation has awarded $102,150 in scholarships among 31 local recipients of which 84% are attending South Carolina colleges/universities. The awards were granted from 13 scholarship funds that the Foundation administers.

Osborne receives music scholarship
      Lower Richland High School senior Mary Allyson Osborne is the winner of the 2008 Dr. John R. Stevenson Music Scholarship. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a Richland One high school senior who plans to pursue post- secondary study in music.

A. C. Flora makes Newsweek's list of America's best high schools
      Newsweek magazine has ranked A.C. Flora High School on its list of the top five percent of public high schools in America. Flora is one of 21 South Carolina high schools included on the 2008 Newsweek/Washington P ost "Challenge Index," an annual survey that measures rigorous course offerings and how all students perform in those classes.
