      King George III of England granted 590 acres on the Santee River to Captain James Sinkler, a Scot emigrant, in 1770. Sinkler developed his plantation, Old Santee, in St. Stephen's Parish. His brother, Peter, built Lifeland and Peru Plantations nearby.
