Greyhound fun facts
• The greyhound breed is over 4,000 years old. They were bred in Egypt to catch rabbits eating the wheat and corn crops and are very good hunters.
• Greyhounds are the second fastest animal on earth! Only the cheetah is faster. Always walk a greyhound on a leash unless in a fenced in area. They can reach speeds of up to 45 mph in three to four steps.
• When running, greyhounds spend almost all of their time in the air. In full stride, all four feet leave the ground. It is as close to flying as a land animal can get.
• Greyhounds are sight hounds. They can see clearly for a distance of half a mile. They are like owls who also hunt by sight. If they see it, they will try to catch it.
• Greyhounds have been owned by some very famous people, including Cleopatra, Christopher Columbus, George Custer, Bo Derek, Jackie Gleason, Babe Ruth, Al Capone, Betty White, Leonard Nimoy.
• Greyhounds are very quiet and need very little exercise. They are often referred to as 45 mph couch potatoes. They do love to curl up and sleep. Some greyhounds sleep with their eyes open. When approaching a greyhound, always call his/her name first to be sure you don't startle them.
• Greyhounds like to play games. Some like to play catch, some tug of war and some just like throwing/ catching stuffed animals.
• Greyhounds are very clean. They spend a lot of time grooming themselves. They always want to look their best. Their short smooth coat of hair is easy to brush. Many people allergic to dogs are not allergic to greyhounds because of their sleek coat and skin type.
• Greyhounds come in 18 primary colors and over 55 different color combinations.
